Troop Thank You Notes

How do we know that our efforts are appreciated? The troops are telling us so! Here are some of the things we've heard from those who have received Operation Paperback books.

Updated April 19, 2008

From Hector V. in Iraq (03.28.08): "Thank you for all the books, I was able to share with the rest of my platoon (we are medics). We all really appreciate the help."

From James H. in Kandahar, Afghanistan (03.28.08): "First of all, to the people who started and manage Operation Paper Back, THANK YOU!! I had been stuck reading the 6 books I brought with me to Afghanistan until I was given a few of my favorites from another Operation Paper Back recipient. I told my wife about you guys and she signed me up. I would like to thank the following for the wonderful shipment of peace of mind: Robert Wilson and the Rotary Club of Gilmer County; The Perry Bookstore in Georgia; Wendy Walton, United Airlines who sent me exactly what I love the most (Mack Bolan) and only that. I am sorry about the delayed response but I wasn’t near the mail facilities to receive the books for a while. Keep up the good work! You help us keep sane out here."

From Jeffrey N. in Iraq (03.26.08): "I was shooting you an email to say thank you to Tillie Nelson, Ilva Madej and Jennifer Reed for sending us books. Once again, these books have flown out of the box before I had a chance to see all of them. We always enjoy reading the books you send us, especially the ones with Arabic and Roman history. Thank you again for your support."

From Eunice F. in Iraq (03.26.08): "Hello all! I recieved 2 boxes safely and am enjoying the selections greatly and sharing with my unit. Thanks so much for your support of the troops. The support of the American people never ceases to amaze me! Thanks again!"

From Joseph B. in Iraq (03.25.08): "Thank you for the books that you have sent me. We pass them around the troop all the time. People like you are hard to come by, and deserve more than we can ever give. These types of organizations that support the Soldiers are of great value. You are the true heros of America and are what we have stood for, for all this time. America has came together regardless of their political stand to support the people of America. Thank you for all that you do and all the support that you continue to give."

From Troy N. on the USS Kitty Hawk (03.25.08): "I received the package yesterday and it was such a great thing as we have just pulled out for a long spring deployment. The choice was great and very in tune with what I asked for. The other guys also send their thanks as pretty much everybody in my department is either reading a book or has one in their back pocket. Again, thank you so much for what you are doing and it really is making a difference."

From Chaplain Vincent G. in Iraq (03.25.08): "Thank you so much for your generous support of our soldiers. It absolutely thrills me to be receive the boxes through your organization. When I asked for Christian books I wondered if that would be possible. I have been overwhelmed! I thought that I would at least be able to send a few books over the places where the soldiers are, instead I am distributing boxes. It is such a wonderful treat for the soldiers and for myself. Being able to give a soldier a book that addresses their area of concern is truly a blessing for my ministry. Operation Paperback has been a ministry multiplier for our unit! Thank you so much for your support and the genuine care of the supporters. I often get personal notes in the boxes that are written to encourage and thank us, it really is uplifting to know that so many Americans supporting soldiers so seriously."

From CPT Tim H. in Iraq (03.25.08): "I am at a periphery forward operating base and so we’ve been getting mail only once a week. When I got mail today I was delightfully surprised by a bunch of packages with books and magazines. I promise to share these books with my fellow Soldiers and I want to thank all of these people and groups who sent me books. Also, there’s no real MWR here so there’s not a lot of reading material around. The books and magazines I received will be at the MWR so other Soldiers can enjoy them too. Thank you, thank you, and thank you for the plethora of reading material. I would like to thank: Marge Stacy, Charmion Woolfe (Friends of the Belmont Library), Jane and Paul Varley, Betty Lucas, Dianne Colford, and Betty Simmons (Order of Eastern Star). Thank you so much for the reading material."

From SFC LR (03.25.08): "Greetings from Afghanistan, I just wanted to say thanks to all of you who showed your support to the men and women serving in the military overseas. My team received the reading material you guys sent and are glad that there are people/organizations such as yours that give their support to military service members serving far away from our family and loved ones. In behalf of Humint Collection Team 1 here in Afghanistan, thanks for your support and care packages, hope to receive more from you guys!"

From PO2 Travis S. in Sicily (02.13.08): “Operation Paperback: Upon receiving your box of books, I would like to take time out of my schedule to send you a thank you letter. The Navy and your country appreciate your time and effort in supporting the troops. I’ve been in the Navy seven years and it always amazes me how much people are willing to help and support you when they find out that you are a service member. Most of my comrades and I say that it’s just a job and expect nothing in return. For some reason, people always try to find a way to help or contribute in one way or another. On behalf of my country and the Navy I would like to say thank you and God Bless America!”

I try and contact everyone who puts an email address in their package. Right now I have several emails to send out. What you are doing is amazing. I think everyone should put their email address on there so I can thank them all with a quick email. The books you are sending are great for my free time. I average about 5 books a week depending on what is happening. Thanks again.”

I've received books from my home town of Lubbock, TX as well as other places from around the U.S. Again, thanks for everything.”

These books will definitely help fill the shelves. I truly hope you understand what an awesome job you are doing of supporting our deployed troops and providing morale. Keep up the great work.”

From 1LT Barrett B. in Iraq (02.03.08): “Dear Mrs. F.: Well, sorry it took us so long to send you a thank you. We've just recently made the transition into our area of operations here in Iraq, and we've been extremely busy. But, throughout the hard work getting here and getting settled in, there have been some folks who remembered us soldiers, and you were at the top of that list! One of the things that really brings a smile to a soldier's face is some unexpected mail, and we here in the shop really appreciated the box of books you sent. We've started a little ‘library’ here in the office, on our wall, and we really appreciate you thinking of us. Our soldiers represent a cross section of American culture and we come from a diverse variety of geographical areas. One thing that bonds us, as volunteer soldiers, is our love of country and devotion to our way of life. A way of life that we fight for and strive to protect, at all costs. In times of stress and hardship, it is important to our soldiers that they know they have support back home. Your patriotism and support inspires us to be our best, and to always live up to the Soldier’s Creed: ‘I am an American Soldier, I am a Warrior and a member of a team; I serve the people of the United States, and live the Army Values; I will always place the mission first, I will never accept defeat, I will never quit, I will never leave a fallen comrade.’ Know that what you do makes a difference, and this selfless act of patriotism you displayed is reflected across thousands of miles and touches countless lives. For all of the soldiers here, thank you.”

From LTC Juan M. in Afghanistan (02.02.08): “Ms Selina F.: Thanks for sending the books from Operation Paperback. Your efforts do not go unnoticed by us. Thanks.”

From IS2 Daniel M. in Kandahar (12.13.07): “Dear Operation Paperback: This is IS2 Daniel M. in Kandahar. I received the books that you sent. And the guys here appreciate it very much. Unfortunately, we are Special Forces with no females, so the box of romantic books was untouched. I put that box in the MWR room where females from other departments will have access, so they will be used. We definitely have enough books to last the deployment, so we don't need anymore. Thank you again.”

They have been shelved and are at the disposal of the service members here. We get plenty of foot traffic in looking for books each day. The American Red Cross team that we replaced spent countless hours organizing our library collection by author. Many thanks for contributing to the morale and welfare of the troops.”

Just a little bit about my battery: We provide radar support for the entire base here. Our radar tracks incoming mortars and rockets. We are on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I am proud to serve because I realize how important we are to the continuing safety of all the soldiers on base. Thank you for all the support you show us. It means a lot to all of us serving here.”

I plan to share all books received with other soldiers here. It's perfect weather for reading right now. It's cold and snowy outside, and we can sit in our heated rooms and read during down time. As an avid reader it was great to receive books that I can read as well as share with others. We have a bookshelf that we have stocked with books, and on a regular basis Soldiers, Sailors,Airmen, Marines, civilian contractors, federal employees and Coalition allies peruse the selection for a book. Books are great because for a brief period of downtime when the opportunity arises to read a book, it allows us to venture to another place and delve into a different world. I wanted to thank you for your support of us. Every chance I get I tell every person I run into, regardless of your feelings or beliefs on the war effort, we cannot allow our support for the service members and civilians deployed overseas to diminish. The support of the American people for us is critically important and I thank you for taking the time to express yours."

Due to the large number of books I've received from your organization, I no longer require books to be sent to me here in Afghanistan. If possible, please take me off of your mailing list. Thank you so much for your support."

We are overwhelmed by the amount of books we have received from the volunteers. This is a fantastic organization and we would like to thank your volunteers for all of their support while we are away from home in harm's way. I appreciate all of the support your organization has shown for the Soldiers over here during this time. I do not have all of the notes from the volunteers that have sent us books to say thank you so I am not able to thank them personally. I do not know if you have a way of tracking who sends items to what Soldier. If you do, can you please pass a big thank you on to them for me? These will give me invaluable help in getting ready to go to P school when I get out of the army. You, ma'am, are the reason America is so great. If you are in the Fort Riley area around Christmas 2008, you, ma'am, have got you a dinner and a movie from an army medic. You rock."

From MAJ Lisa C. in Afghanistan (11.01.07): To Whom It May Concern (esp Marge S. in Salem SC): Thanks so much for the time & energy spent into collecting and mailing books to us here in Afghanistan. We appreciate your continued support."

From MSGT Cheryl S. in Kuwait (11.01.07): "I would like to thank you for the shipment of paperback books I recently recieved! It was an outstanding selection of books that the entire unit enjoyed choosing from! We are a small organization here in Kuwait, we train soldiers going up north, and they in turn, train the Iraqi security forces so they can take over the security for their country. We filter the books though their tents, so they can read during whatever downtime they might get in their travels. Having books for them to read, while it might seem minor to some, definately gives the soldiers peace of mind, or an escape, for a period of time! Keep up the great work! Thank you from all our hearts!"

From CPT Jonathan H. in Iraq (10.29.07): "Chrissy: I wanted to thank you for the continued support you send to my unit. I am often asked by people back in the states why we do what we do. They ask me about being away from home, or the lack of comforts, or the mission, usually couched with 'I don't know how (or why) you all do it.' I usually write back and tell them about the conditions here in Iraq, or tell them of the oppression I have seen, or of the children's faces filled with happiness and hope, or the trash and sewerage in the streets. I tell them that we are winning this fight (because I truly believe we are!) and regardless of why people think we were sent here, we are here now and we are here to find terrorists and defeat them, and we are here to leave Iraq better than when we found it. Nothing else matters to us now. I want to share a story with you. This weekend I was sitting talking to one of my troopers about re-enlisting. He is a positive kid, 4 years in the Army, motivated to his task and dedicated to those around him. I expected he would re-enlist and would require little convincing. As we were talking about his options and his motivation to soldier, he said 'Sir, I am staying in the Army and I will be happy continuing to do what I do. But I am not motivated by the words you say, or the money in the bonus, or for my buddies, or by the feeling I have being a Paratrooper. I do it for my kids and my wife and what my job means to them and their future.' He then handed me a tattered copy of the poem below. He said when he was here for the invasion he was a brand new private and it was sent to him in a forwarded e-mail or something. He has have it ever since and has never shown it to anybody but his wife. As I read it, it hit me like a bag of bricks. I thought I would share it with you. I have typed it exactly as it was on the copy he gave me and I have given credit to the author so I believe you would be free to share this story and poem with anyone you like. I thank God everyday for giving me the opportunity to lead America's Sons and Daughters and I pray I am doing it right. May God continue to bless the American Soldier! All the Way... and then some!

'The things that make a Soldier great and send him out to die, To face the flaming cannon's mouth, nor ever question why, Are lilacs by the little porch, the row of tulips red, The peonies and pansies, too, the old petunia bed, The grass plot where his children play, the roses on the wall: Tis these that make a Soldier great. He's fighting for them all. Tis not the pomp and pride of kings that make a Soldier brave; Tis not allegiance to the flag that over him may wave; For Soldiers never fight so well on land or on the foam As when behind the cause they see the little place called home. Endanger but that humble street whereon his children run - You make a Soldier of the man who never bore a gun. What is it through the battle smoke that valiant Soldiers see? The little garden far away, the budding apple trees. The little patch of ground back there, the children at the play, Perhaps a tiny mound behind the simple church of gray. The golden thread of courage isn't linked to castle dome, But to the spot, where'er it be - the humble spot called home. And now the lilacs bud again and all is lovely there, And homesick Soldiers far away know spring is in the air; The tulips come to bloom again, the grass once more is green, And every man can see the spot where all his joys have been. He sees his children smile at him, he hears the bugle call, And only death can stop him now - he's fighting for them all.'

Edgar A. Guest, ca. 1940.

From Clint R. (10.28.07): “Dear Friend: I would like to thank you for the books that you sent to IC3 W. IC3 W. works for me and gave me the box of books. I put them in our small library. I am sure the entire ship appreciates your kindness. We appreciate all the folks back at home that take time out of their busy day to make our lives a little better. Thanks to all the folks that helped.”

From Rachael G. (10.28.07): “Just wanted to let you all know that I received the books today and greatly appreciate them. Being able to get away in a book for a little while makes time here go by much faster. Thanks again.”

From SPC Scott S. (10.28.07): “I just received a book shipment from Stockton, CA. I thank you all for doing this program. It really does help us out at the end of the day to be able to relieve some of the daily stress we endure. If you could extend my gratitude to the School, I would be greatly thankful.”

From SFC Karen K. (10.26.07): “Thanks a lot for all the books that have been sent to me. I have had the opportunity to share the books on the camp with other soldiers as well. Thanks again.”

From CPT Tim H. (10.24.07): “Today I received 2 packages from Operation Paperback, and it honestly made my day. Thank you so much! On the web site, I had requested some New Yorker magazines and I received 3 of those and now I have some great bedtime reading! I also received a separate box of Halloween candy, snacks, and paperback books. I am so thankful for what I received and will definitely mail the 2 individuals, who sent the 2 packages, thank you letters. I feel truly blessed and am delighted at getting these 2 packages (which were my first ones from Operation Paperback). Thanks again, and God Bless. Thank you to Ms. Julianne B. and Donna for the box of paperback books, Halloween candy, and snacks. Thank you to Barbara T. for the New Yorker magazines! You all are the best!”

From PFC Lacretia P. (10.24.07): “I have received the books and would really like to say thank you to the supportive citizens back home. I have already begun to distribute the books to soldiers who enjoy reading and I have already begun reading myself. Thanks a lot and God Bless!”

From CPT Robyn G. in Iraq (10.23.07): “I want to send thanks to Operation Paperback and the following persons for books and support they have provided to the Troops here - Charlotte C. of Bainbridge Is., WA, Mima G. & Friends of The Cellar Webster Library branch of The New York Public Library, New York, NY.”

From LTCOL Michael G. in Afghanistan (10.22.07): “Dear Operation Paperback: On be half of all the service members here in Afghanistan thank you for the continued support. More books arrived last week and have made their way to eager eyes. Thanks, it means a lot.”

From BM1 Randall J. (10.22.07): “Dear John: “Thank you for the nice letter, and again for the donation of books you have sent. I have to apologize for the lengthy return; snail mail is unbearably slow where we are at--over two months it has taken. That is what happens when trying to establish working relations in Africa. The ship has been here visiting various ports up and down the West Coast of Africa. We help train their Naval forces, which are very small, in proper operations such as boarding, force protection and all that good military stuff. It has been one on the most challenging deployments as of yet, and my last, for this guy is set to retire in 12 short months. I found out about Operation Paperback last summer while I was in Kuwait. So I figured, hey why not ask, might not be in the War Zone but we are deployed in a arduous area. Again, I thank you for the time and effort you have put in to help a few sailors escape into the wonderful world of literature.”

From SSG Darius D. (10.21.07): “I would like to thank you for the wonderful box of books. Your books have been put in a Squadron Morale, Welfare and Recreation facility. This means 600 to 800 soldiers will have access to the books. Again thank you for your support.”

From Jennifer Y. (10.20.07): “We just got back out to sea for another grueling period on the water and was fortunate enough to hear that I had two packages awaiting me in the Post Office. Everyone I know was excited to learn that they were boxes of books. They were divided up and scattered throughout the ship within minutes of the boxes being opened. They are currently making their rounds and providing an escape to a plethora of sailors right now. Thank you so much for sending the packages. I, along with everyone who benefits from the books you send, am truly appreciative and I hope you understand how much a book can mean during the long hours out to sea. Thank you again!”

From CW2 Michael B. in Afghanistan (10.20.07): “My name is CW2 Michael B. and I would like to say thank you for all the support that this program is giving. It is great to know that the people back home are so supportive. I have shared the books that I have received with others and it is great comfort to know that they help to pass the time for so many here. Keep up the good work and may God bless all those who contribute to your organization. Thank You From All of Us in Afghanistan.”

From 1SG Michael T. in Iraq (10.20.07): “ Operation Paperback: I am aware of your program because I came across some of your books and found a flyer with the above email addresses on it. I am a relatively newly arrived first sergeant with a unit that recently rotated into our duty station in Iraq. I believe your books reached the previous unit, or at least other soldiers who work in this area. Not knowing if anyone had sent you a well-deserved "Thank You," I thought I would make sure you heard from us. It is heartwarming that so many Americans back home find ways to show their support. Americans send books, cards, toiletries and other goodies to us. It's really a good thing to do. Please inform the folks back home that it is appreciated by many soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines here. I for one am grateful and I certainly want you to know it. Please pray that the Good Lord will work good in the lives of all the souls here - American and otherwise. May He also bless you and fill your hearts with joy.”

From SSG Theresa L. (10.19.07): “Hello to all: I am writing to say thanks for all the support. We appreciate all you do for the soldiers.”

From SSGT Nicole W. in Iraq (10.19.07): “I want to thank Merryhill School for their donation of books to my unit. I set the box out for all to see. Our office is a high traffic area as we are the support unit that services the entire base. I am sure the books will find good homes! Thank you so much for taking the time to send them. It means a lot to know people are supporting us and helping us to have an outlet and something to pass the time we have when we are not hard at work. ‘God Bless you for giving!’ Luke 6:38.”

From Holly L. (10.17.07): “I am writing you today to tell you and your staff excellent job in sending my husband books. He has received several shipments of books and wanted me to tell you all thank you for your support. Without your support in the military our service members would not feel like their jobs have meaning. Thank you for your thoughts.”

From CPT Duncan A. in Iraq (10.17.07): “Dear Operation Paperback: Thank you for the shipment. It got to us safely. Thanks again for supporting the troops.”

From SFC Malcolm T. (10.17.07): “ I want to thank everyone that has helped the soldiers in combat idle time. As we all know the Army is hurry up and wait. If it wasn't for your selfless service and general concern for our welfare, time here would seem to triple itself with boredom. The books, and other items you send to help us pass the down time, not only helps our state of mine but helps us understand that the American people are behind us no matter what. So again, Thanks. PS: I would like to personally thank the Lakewood, CO Police Department for the contribution. I gave them enough trouble when I was a teenager, I am glad they are there protecting my family.”

From SPC Andrew M. (10.16.07): “Dear Marilynne: We just got the paperback books that your company donated. There was a wild rush from everyone when I opened the box to get the "good authors". Robert Ludlum is a favorite here. I went to 91w (medic) school at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. My wife and I went on our honeymoon in Corpus Christi, TX and the other medic here is from Austin, TX. (Her name is D., BTW.) I always tell people that I was born in California, but not to hold that against me. I currently live in Fayetteville, NC with my wife and son. I think that if I have to settle down, it's going to have to be in Texas. (Haven't decided on the city yet thought.) The people in TX are by far the most friendly, patriotic and down to earth people that I've met. The nice thing about a paperback is: 1. It's better than a movie, because it's not ruined by some director in Hollywood. 2. It doesn't need batteries. 3. It can be read and enjoyed more than once, by many people. 4. If it gets scratched, or dirty, it's still readable. 5. It's a good way to spend time. 6. It's a good cure for insomnia. 7. They fit in a pocket. 8. You can tell the good ones from the bad ones, because they look worn out. 9. It's a good present to re-gift when you're done with it. 10. It improves literacy. (Hey bob, what does conundrum mean?) We all appreciate your generosity and support. The worst thing about a 15 month deployment is finding ways to spend our free time and make it go by faster. Books are a great way to escape reality for a bit and help the days go by. Thank you all very much.”

USO Center Director Jonathan M. (10.15.07): “Dear Delores: Thank you so much for the kind donation of 18 paperback books we received today. Please pass on my thanks and best wishes to the members of Senior Citizens Center in Arkansas.”

From CPT Jason M. in Iraq (10.15.07): “I just wanted to let you guys know that we have been receiving great support. We have recently received several boxes of books. Thank you.”

From Joshua C. (10.15.07): “Thanks a lot for sending the shipment of books. I'm sure we will all enjoy them. Reading is a big part of our free time. There’s nothing better then getting a box full of new books.”

From SGT Chad P. (10.14.07): “Thank you for the shipment of books. We live at an outpost without an MWR so I have become the library for the place. This shipment will help pass time, and let people escape the stress of duty.
Thanks again.”

From SGT Mary R. (10.13.07): “Hello to everyone in Operation Paperback. Much thanks for all the books and goodies you sent to us. We really enjoyed them. Your book selection was great. It really helped for me to pass my time here. Once again, thank you and God bless.”

From CPT Keith G. in Iraq (10.12.07): “Thanks for the books. They arrived today. I will both read and share them with my fellow soldiers. Thanks again.”

From CW2 Keu Y. in Iraq (10.06.07): “Operation Paperback and Genny S.: Sorry it has taken a little while to get back to you. Thank you very much for the books. The troops enjoyed having something to read to help pass the time here. As for us over here things are still busy and a little crazy, but that makes time go by fairly quick. We all appreciate the support that you are giving to the troops. Thank you very much for your support.”

From Jose G. (10.06.07): “Dear Patriots of Operation Paperback: Thank you for the wonderful packages of books. I have received all of the packages you have sent me. I wish I could have written sooner, but I have been real busy with work and I just got internet set up in my room a couple of days ago. I really appreciate all the books you have sent me, and my wife Rebecca, she is the one that got in contact with you. I don’t know what else to say, but I hope that God blesses you with good fortune. You are all doing a great service to your country, Thank you.”

From CPT Tavares T. in Iraq (10.04.07): “Dear Ms. Eleanor D.: Thank you for your support. Your motivation, vision, passion and dedication have touched the hearts of many and accomplished a monumental feat. Your time and effort are greatly appreciated. My Soldiers and I have been deployed since March of 2007. We are projected to return home mid to late 2008. Our daily living conditions continue to improve every day. However, we could not do what we do on a daily basis without the support of individuals like yourself. Currently as part of the “Surge” we continue missions and operations focused on making Iraq a more safe and secure environment, while keeping our families and friends back home safe. It is because of Americans like yourself that Soldiers are proud of their service to our great country. The generosity and compassion to support is what continues to remind our young warriors of the American spirit and what being an American is truly about. You are truly thoughtful and appreciated by all here. Again, thank you for all your support. My Soldiers and I are truly grateful. You will never fully know how much your time and effort have lifted spirits here.”

From CPT John Z. in Iraq (10.05.07): “To Lisa S. of Newnan, GA: Thank you so much for the box of paperback books and also for the candy! I'll share them around the work area. We all really appreciate the support. Thanks again.”

From Scott E. (10.04.07): “Ms. McC.: We received your books today and I want to say THANK YOU! They’re a huge success. Most of them were taken before they even had a chance to hit the shelf.. You wouldn’t believe how something as small as a book can turn a person’s day around. I have a feeling that they’ll be worn out in no time and that’s a good thing.”

From Scott E. (10.04.07): “This is just a quick note to let you know that the books/DVDs/CDs arrived yesterday. Your contribution to the Sailors and Marines here is greatly appreciated and we look forward to the next shipment. The boxes received had notes of thanks and encouragement from the following groups and individuals: Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, P.C.; Mrs. Lois G. L.; Denise & Randy B.; Jane & Paul V.; Julie S.; Karen L. McC.; John J. T. Please pass along our sincere thanks to these folks. They’ve done more for us with this than you can imagine.”

From MAJ Zachary B. in Iraq (10.03.07): “John, I have received more books. Thank you very much for the effort and generosity. I put these books in my unit MWR area and hundreds of people get to enjoy them.”

From Rebecca G. in Iraq (09.21.07): “I just wanted to let you know that I received the books you sent and I am very thankful. I have been in Iraq for 3 months, but my husband Jose is still in Kuwait. I will let you know when he gets his books. And thank you. This is very kind of all of you to do for us. And you picked out good ones.”

From SFC Kerry W. (09.12.07): “Thanks for the books. They will give me a lot of good reading time, especially the chess books. Thanks again for your support.”

From SSG Damon G. in Iraq (09.11.07): “ The Kind Folks at Operation Paperback--York, PA: Thank you all for the books that you have sent to me. I have enjoyed many of them. The rest I have given to others. They have all been enjoyed and passed on to others after they were read. Most of them wound up in the MWR reading room. Sort of a makeshift library for the camp that we are on. I and the rest of the soldiers in my platoon greatly appreciate the effort that you put forth to take care of us. We only have 3 months left so I wanted to say THANK YOU. You don't have to send anymore books for us. We will have plenty to last us until we leave. I can honestly say that the program that you are involved in is awesome for those of us who like to read. I read anywhere from 1 to 3 books a week. I like to read a wide variety of subjects and what you sent to me, fit the bill. Again, thank you for taking time out to take care of us over here. I wish you all well. I hope you will be able to find someone else to send the books to. Some of us can exist without digital media and digital entertainment devices to entertain us. I would say that less than half of the people I work with are avid readers. I have one soldier who has been out of school for 4 years now and has read only 1 book since his high school graduation. He loves video games, TV, watching movies, etc. Look out when the power goes out and the batteries run down. Unfortunately the younger people these days drift farther away from just sitting down with a book. Oh well, enough that. Thank you.”

From Alan S. (09.10.07): “Thank you very much for the books you all sent to me.”

From LCPL Darin C. (09.10.07): “We received your shipment today, looks like some good reading. Keep up the good work.”

From Red Cross Station Chairman William J. in Germany (09.07.07): “Dear Marilynne and Chrissy: My name is Bill J. and I am the Station Chairman for Volunteer Service at the Red Cross Chapter in Germany and work with our Station Manager John S. We recently received yours and Chrissy Honeywell’ shipment of paperback books. The last two shipment I hand carried over to the Commanders and they were shipped off to our troops down range in Afghanistan. You will be happy to know the next shipment, when large enough, is slated to go very happily to the troops of Afghanistan. You will be proud to know these troops are performing in such a proud manner representing America and the United States Army. All the books have been received with such gracious appreciation. You have really been making their day and helping fill their downtime, when they are lucky enough to have any with the hours of fire missions they receive on a routine basis. As I am the proud spouse and a volunteer for the Red Cross, I have personally taken over the program to ensure timely delivery down range to our troops. God bless all of you back in America and your families and friends who proudly support our men and women in uniform. You have my word that I will make every effort to keep you posted on the receipt and delivery of the books you all have worked so hard to help get to our soldiers. Please know your efforts don’t ever go unnoticed and are so very much appreciated by both our troops and their loved ones, knowing their troops have not been forgotten back home. GOD BLESS AMERICA AND GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU AT OPERATION PAPERBACK.”

From SGT Zachary S. in Iraq (09.05.07): “Good morning: Thank you, again, for the shipment of more fantastic books! Operation Paperback has more than exceeded a job well done. The shipments received have provided many Soldiers here with excellent reading material. This shipment was from Abigail E. I do appreciate her time and effort, and if you could pass on my gratitude to her, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you so much for the outstanding job you all are doing in providing us with a very valuable escape from the day-to-day action over here. It is nice to know that organizations such as yours are out there supporting the service members. Once again thank you for the books and your support.”

From SFC Keith E. (9.02.07): “Hello. This is SFC English. I received a very nice assortment of books on the 15th of August from your organization. I have passed them among the Soldiers. They and I thank you very much for your time and efforts to make things a little better for us. Thanks again!”

From LTC Kerry S. in Afghanistan (08.31.070: “To all the Volunteers: Thank you for service to America's service members around the world. I'm currently serving in Afghanistan and cannot tell you how appreciative we are of this great program. It helps provide us a little normalcy and to get away from the realities we face everyday. Again, thank you so much for your support. God Bless! ‘The Soldier's heart, the Soldier's spirit, the Soldier's soul are everything. Unless the Soldier's soul sustains him, he cannot be relied on and will fail himself and his country in the end.’ GEN George C. Marshall.”

From Berlinda R. in Iraq (08.30.07): “Thank you guys very much for the books. They sure have made time here in Iraq go a little faster. I have been here since mid-October and hopefully will be heading home within the next few
months. The books I receive are put to good use by my battle buddies and myself. Thank You Very Much.”

From SFC Neal G. in Iraq (08.27.07): “Mr. John J. T. Thanks for sending your box of book to me. We as Soldiers all have to stick together and fight; we have to be close to each other and work as a team out here. So, we share and do thing together. We share a lot of deep thoughts about a lot of different things happening. I know it is better to write a letter than to type it. My handwriting is not the best to be able to read; that's why I type this out. A little about me: I am married for 3 years now and have one son who will be turning 1 year old this Aug. How I miss him and my wife. She is in the Philippines with my son at her parents’ house there while I am here. This I thought would be a better place because she knows where to go for medical assistance for my son. It also allows her parents to get to see their grandson also. I just want to say thank you; all the Soldiers say thank you for the box of books and most of all thinking about us here in Iraq. ‘Problems are solved at the lowest level, then I come to the rescue’."

From LCDR Michael S. in Afghanistan (08.27.07): “Dear folks at OPB: I am overwhelmed by the support your organization provides. Right now, though, our library is well stocked thanks in part to y'all. Also, thankfully, I will be leaving to go home in three months, so please do not send any more books. Thank you for all you have done and continue to do for other soldiers. God bless you and yours.”

From PFC David C. in Iraq (08.16.07): “Dear Y. Family: Greetings from Iraq! I received your package of books today and was extremely happy to receive a package period! Unfortunately I am getting ready to redeploy so I will be making my way home shortly. Hooray for me! I think 3 tours is more than enough for one guy to handle at 23 years of age! LOL ! Anyhow, it was great to receive support from someone in the States. Take care of yourselves and the rest of our fellow Americans fighting this war. God Bless You!”

From SGT John W. in Afghanistan (08.13.07): “I am an infantryman currently deployed to Afghanistan and I just wanted to thank you for all of your support. Stay safe and may God continue to bless you as you have blessed us.”

From SPC David P. (08.07.07): “Hello: Thank you all for all the wonderful packages of reading material and other gifts that were sent to me during my deployment. Each one of the packages was sent by volunteers who always had a very personalized note from them. I leave from here in mid-October, heading back to the Great United States and eventually back to the state of Alabama. The support of organizations of citizens back home such as Operation Paperback really helps in times like these. Thanks again for all you do.”

From SSG Kimberly D. (07.29.07): “Wow, you really have great taste in books! One of my soldiers has already jumped into one book and is about 20 pages into it, and we just got mail a few hours ago. From Carol P., USO Center Director in Kuwait (07.25.07): “Hello Delores: I want to let you know that the USO Kuwait has received a box of books through your organization. The letter inside says that the books were donated by the members of the Senior Citizens Center in Arkansas. Will you please pass on my message of appreciation to the senior citizens? Our camp is the last stop for our troops before they head north into the war zone. We have many readers who come to our center to pick up books to help relieve some of the boredom they experience here while waiting to deploy. Others pick up books to take with them into Iraq. All of the troops are grateful for any support they receive from home. God Bless.”

From MAJ Warren W. in Iraq (07.25.07): “Ms. B. and friends at Operation Paperback: I just received the box of paperbacks and magazines you mailed on 20 July. Thank you for your support. From Alvin C. (06.27.07): “Hello all: I thought I would share the postcard I received yesterday: ‘Mr. C: Just a note to let you know that I received your box of books. Thank you very much. They are a welcome addition to our library. The variety is great, too! We are located in the International Zone, and this camp has been in use for three or four rotations. There are quite a lot of books left over from other rotations, but new arrivals are always welcome. Thanks again. CW3 MJJ.’ Have a great day!”

From MAJ Peter D. in Afghanistan (06.23.07): “Dear Fountain United Methodist Church and The Bookworm: Thank you very much for the box of paperback books I recently received. I immediately shared them with the people in my compound and office. Folks here are often in search of a good read for an escape when you have a short break. Especially appreciated are the copies of the troop transport pilot book. We are all still fascinated by stories from the Greatest Generation. We very much appreciate the continued support of so many people back home. Please remember that your thoughts and prayers make a difference in the lives of the airmen, soldiers, sailors, and marines serving here in Afghanistan, in Iraq, and around the world. Thank you again.”

Just saying thank you for everything you are doing for us out here!!!! Just know that every time you mail one of those boxes out that you are really make somebody smile way out here. Thank you again so much and can’t wait to hear from you soon.”

From SSG Timothy B. in Afghanistan (06.20.07): “To Operation Paperback Staff: Thank you for the recent shipment of books. The books that were sent were outstanding selections by incredible authors. From CPT Dean S. in Iraq (06.19.07): “Dear Patriots: I received the shipment of paperback books today and wanted to send a quick note to tell you thank you very much! The support we get from home is outstanding and means a great deal to all of us. Despite the significant debate on how to best deal with the situations in Iraq and Afghanistan, it is reassuring to us to have the American people supporting the war-fighter. This is my second deployment to Iraq and the first deployment I experienced the same outstanding support from home. Thanks again and I will share the books with my medical platoon and anyone who comes to the aid station for care will have the opportunity to take a book with them. Happy 4th of July!”

From CPL Zachary W. (08.04.07): “Mrs. Long: I just received the box of paperbacks you sent, and I must say thank you very much! The titles are outstanding, and happen to be a few that I have been trying to locate. A couple of my friends are also big Grisham fans, so they will be happy when I share these new books with them as well! Thank you so much for your time and efforts in supporting all of us over here. Your efforts are not forgotten, and are appreciated every single time I open up and read one of these books.
Thank you, take care and God bless.”

From CPT Dani W. (08.03.07): “Everyone!! Thank you so much for sending oodles and oodles of books. To have such an outpouring of support from EVERYONE has been an incredible experience. I truly appreciate every ounce of energy that all the volunteers have put into sending packages. At first, my goal was to get some books to read and send to Emma (my daughter), but you have definitely gone above and beyond my expectations. Just in the past 3 weeks I have received over 600 books. I have passed them out to other Soldiers and groups around my base. I will personally thank everyone, but just wanted to let everyone know that I have enough books to read for every day that I will be in this country. No additional shipments are necessary. I truly appreciate your support and look forward to return stateside soon. Thank you so much again!!!

From Kevin B. (08.02.07): “Hello: I just received a box of books and would like to thank you for your selfless efforts. These books, and others that have been sent to me, have been distributed throughout the troop. I know that my fellow soldiers and I greatly appreciate your thoughts and well wishes. Thanks for your support.”

From MAJ Beth D. in Iraq (08.03.07): “OP Paperback: Just wanted to let you know that I received two boxes of books recently--one from the Kennedy family and a second from Carla Walker. Our soldiers appreciate the support of the US people and the books you provide. Any books I can’t find time to read will end up at the Morale Welfare and Recreation (MWR) library so someone will read them. We are deep into the dog days of summer with temperatures reaching into the 120s. So it’s hot, with night temperatures cooling into the 90s. You’d think that would feel pretty good after 120, but it’s still just constantly hot. Right now with our extension, it’s looking like we have a little over four months left here. Under our original plan I’d be home in two months. Again, I appreciate the support, and can’t wait to get home.”

From SPC Timothy M. (08.02.07): “Hello Chrissy! How are you doing? We are doing pretty well here all things considered. My Battalion Commander and I (his driver) have had several conversations about your organization. I am looking at setting up a sign out register for DVDs and CDs if we have a good turnout on them. This will ensure that all soldiers get the opportunity to watch the movies or hear the CD. Although this will > mean yet another additional duty for myself, our guys are worth it. The ****** Support Battallion is a very hard working group of dedicated men and women. We appreciate all of your help with the books and DVDs! We have received 3 boxes so far. Below I will list who and where they came from. If I need to email that info to the email on the letters please let me know. I will try my best to correspond with all of the people who find it in their hearts to contribute to our cause. Thank you and may God bless you for your kind heart! 1 box received from -Mrs. Sydney Corbett, 2 boxes from - Dawn & Tim Mark”

From SGT Lillian C. (08.02.07): “Members of the DAR: Thank you so much for sending the books. I was very pleased to see there was a Maeve Binchy amongst the pile including ‘The Color Purple.’ You are an awesome bunch and we really appreciate you taking the time to pick out and package these items. We have a little Ed Ctr where the
soldiers can check their email and such and we place books, crossword puzzles, and snacks in this room, so your books most definitely will be enjoyed. Thank you again and be safe.”

From CAPT Christopher B. (08.01.07): Jane & Pauley Varley, Juliann Krammer, Ginger Thielman, Operation Paperback: Thank you for the books and magazines. We have 200 marines in our company and reading material gets distributed very quickly. The marines definitely do not have much leisure time, but when they do it is nice to have something "American" to read. The marines here have been very well taken care of by people back home. I am very impressed and pleasantly surprised with the amount of support from the people throughout the country. With all the emotions that the marines have to deal with, it is nice to know that worrying about whether or not the people back home support us is not one of them thanks to people like you.”

From David T. in Iraq (08.01.07): “Greetings from the great sand box! Thank you for the books. They are being distributed to our troops and friends throughout theater. This is great that you are supporting everyone here. The days are long and it is very hot--100 degrees by 10 am most days, 8 am on the others. We reached 123 degrees as the high
temp. Thanks again.”

From Douglas C. (07.30.07): “Hello and thank you to everybody who has sent packages to me in the past few weeks. The other soldiers in my unit thank you all very much as well. I'm not just writing to thank you though. Two days ago I received a package
from June Basone of Washington, MI. Unfortunately the tape on the bottom of the package had ripped open during shipment, and I'm afraid that if there was any note with the package that it did not make it. I wanted to send a thank you email to this person directly. If there is any way this message could find its way to that person, I would be very grateful. Thank you, June, from myself and all of my fellow soldiers working with me.”

From SPC O. in Iraq (07.30.07): “Hi: My name is SPC O. and am here to thank you very much for the package I just received from you. I do really appreciate your efforts. Those little things you do make a difference for most of us here. Thank you Jane and all.”

From SGT Timothy H. in Iraq (07.30.07): “I wanted to say thanks so very much for the books I received. I really love to read to decompress after a long hard day, which we all have over here in Iraq a lot. I now have enough books that are what I like to read to get me through my deployment. I thank everyone involved with this operation. Please take me off the mailing list so that other soldiers can enjoy books as well. Thank you very much.”

From John B. (07.30.07): “Lori L.: I received a box of books from you today. I just wanted to say thank you and that they will be getting a lot of use. I also wanted to say thanks for the kind words in the letter. Thank you.”

From SSG Eugenio R (07.18.07): “Thanks: Wow; I'm in shock. I greatly appreciate the books, the support, and knowledge offered to me by the members of Operation Paperback. Please take a closer look at DSC01918[1].”

From GYSGT Charles D. in Iraq (07.18.07): “Robert & Susan L. & Kim B.: Today I rec'd the books you all sent us out here, and they were an immediate hit. Marines were grabbing books left and right. We were put into a building that no other unit has used before and we are on a different rotation than the rest of the units out here since we came over on a ship. Therefore we don't have the ‘goodies’ that the other units leave on their shelves when they leave. We are building our stock as we go. Thanks so much for the thoughts and generosity.”

From SPC Maira M. (07.17.07): “I would really want to thank Operation Paperback for making this service possible, but especially Audrey and Tom F. for the package of books I received. I especially enjoyed ‘Raising Abel.’ It was captivating from beginning to end. It was my little way of escaping into a world far away from my world--something other than the usual. Hope you continue to do what you are doing for all of us overseas because a book really does make a difference.”

From CPT Andy N. (07.17.07): “Dear Friends: You and your books have been a wonderful gift to me and my soldiers. I have received two packages so far and they have been amazing. Thank you for your great selection of books and for sending them so quickly. Thank you for organizing them and for sending them to troops all over the world. I know that I appreciate them and I am certain that all of us do. Again, thanks.”

From SGM Wade P. in Afghanistan (07.16.07): “Greetings: Just wanted to say thank you for the books. I made them available to all my paratroopers here in Afghanistan. They are a big hit, helping pass the time when they are not working. Thanks for all you do and the support that you provide.”

From CPT Moises O. in Afghanistan (07.15.07): “Leslie: Thanks for your support and books. We got them today and I put them out for our soldiers. Thanks again!”

From LTJG Robert S. (07.14.07): “We really appreciate the shipment of books. We have a minimal library here on base and a number of the titles you have shipped us are new additions. Thanks again for the great support!”

From SFC Nester R. 07.13.07): “Hi: My name is SFC R. and I would like to thank Sue H. and Meg M. (Clairmont Presbyterian Church), and of course Operation Paperback for the books. Our team consists of 12 men and we always are looking for something to read when operation tempo allows. The books are a temporary escape from our reality. Thanks from Team *****.”

From CPT Scott V. in Afghanistan (07.13.07): “I received two boxes of books today in the mail, one from New Jersey and one from TX. Thank you for all that you do to support us out here in Afghanistan. It will be hard to express my appreciation adequately through email. I look forward to reading many of these!”

From Daniel R. (07.13.07): “I would like to thank you for the thoughtful shipment. I truly appreciate your efforts in supporting us and taking the time to put together my package. I look forward to reading the many selections in my downtime. Thank you again.”

From SSGT Denise M. (07.11.07): “I would just like to say Thank You to everyone that is helping this organization. It is great effort that you all are doing. It is nice to be able to escape in a book while we are here. It makes our days go by faster. Thank you.”

From SSG Bernard V. (07.09.07): “Hi Guys: Thank you very much for the books. We started our library today and some soldiers picked some up today. Once they are done they will be returned for others to read and we will circulate them with our troops in other forward operating bases. Some soldiers are asking for non fiction....mainly on leadership...pass them on if you have them. Thanks again for the package and let everyone know that we are very happy for getting them. God Bless!”

From Kerry W. (07.08.07): “Thanks for the books and the support. Look like a lot of good reading. Again, thanks for the support.”

From CPO Aja W. (07.06.07): “Hello: I received shipment from Jim M., and I would like to say thank you very much. My troops and I really appreciate them. ‘Tell me, and I forget. Teach me, and I remember. Involve me, and I learn.’ -- Benjamin Franklin.”

From 1LT Scott P. in Iraq (07.06.07): “Operation Paperback: Thank you for the two packages. My Marines greatly appreciate them.”

From Rollo B. in Iraq (07.05.07): “Dear Liz D. and everybody else at Operation Paperback: Thank you so much for the package that arrived today. I was a little bit nervous when I saw the name, as so many of the books that get sent over here have Fabio on the cover and aren't exactly aimed at the Army demographic. Your books, however, look relevant and interesting, so I very much look forward to reading them and passing them along to my platoon mates.”

From SSGT Tami D. in Iraq (07.03.07): “Just wanted to take the time and let you know I really appreciate your support and thanks for the books. I received your package on 2 July 2007.”

From SSG Michael R. (06.30.07): “I want to say thank you to all the people that have sent books to me. There was a big hold on all the boxes coming into the country so I am now receiving all the boxes of books that were sent way back in Dec. I want to thank every individual and group that has sent me books. I had received mail from people wanting to know if I had received the books they had sent, and, yes, they are coming in now. Thank you again and all my soldiers thank you, too. No book has gone unloved.”

From LTC Steve W. in Iraq (06.29.07): “Yes, it is 1140 PM and I am still at work, but I thought I would take the time to thank you for sending books to us here in *****. Sometimes after a 16 hour day it takes a little entertaining reading to calm down enough to get some sleep. On behalf of all the soldiers who share the books you send – THANKS!!”

From 2LT Darryl Hopkins (06.28.07): “I have received the package of books. I appreciate the time and dedication you put into this effort for the troops. Thank you very much.”

From CW3 J. Paul D. in Kuwait (06.27.07): “Attn: Binnie Syril B. I received the box of books you sent. Thanks!! We keep a mini-library for our unit, and the books get passed around from user to user. It's great to get some new reading material! Thanks again.”

your help here. Thank you.”

From Shelby H. in Kuwait (06.23.07): “Operation Paperback: I just wanted to say thank you for the shipment of the books I received today. They will definitely help us pass the time until we can return home. Thank you for supporting us.”

From SPC Jennifer T. (06.23.07): “Thank you for the books. I received them a few days ago. My only request is that I don't receive boxes of books a day. Thank you for everything y’all do. Thanks.”

From SPC Christopher B. (06.23.07): “Hey: Just wanted to drop you guys a quick line to let you know I received the books your organization sent me. I really appreciate it. I have established a book trading spot within our battalion that seems to be going really well. Thanks again for all your support.”

From MAJ Peter D. in Afghanistan (06.22.07): “Ms. B.: Thank you very much for the box of SF/Fantasy paperbacks. It is such a great assortment that I immediately shared it in the compound where I live. We are a well traveled group, so I doubt it will be much time before the books are scattered about the bases of Afghanistan. I think most everyone enjoys the opportunity of escape time with a good book provides. Although blessed with better connections to our families and friends back home than ever before due to the internet, we still need time to wind down from time to time. It may only be for a few minutes, but the books often provide that. We all appreciate the support you give us through programs such as Operation Paperback. I'll have been in uniform for 19 years next week and it never ceases to amaze me--the amount of support we get from individuals and groups back home. Know that you have a direct impact on the spirits and well being of the fine men and women I have the honor of serving with. The Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines of today's Armed Forces are as fine as any our nation has ever produced. You raised us right and support us well. Thank you. We'll keep passing the books around so don't be surprised if more people add their names to your rolls. Take care and thank you again.”

From SFC Timothy H. (06.21.07): “I had received a shipment of books through the program. Thank you for the books and the thought.”

From MSG Nichelle F. (06.24.07): “Greetings: Thank you for all you have done providing our service members books and magazines to read during their downtime. I personally enjoyed several books I have received and I was able to pass books to other service members. However, my tour is about to end. Please discontinue sending books to address. Again, thanks for all you have done.”

From Adam B. (06.23.07): “I want to say thank you to you all that support us troops! Your overwhelming generosity, love, and care mean a lot to us here on the front lines. I have gotten four boxes packed full of books and that is way more than I imagined! These wonderful books give me great knowledge and entertainment when I have some personal time, which is priceless. You guys are doing a great thing, and keep up the great job! There's no way I could read them all if I tried! However, I must say, please remove my name from the list so that other deserving soldiers may receive the shipments that I will not be able to get to. Thank you again for all of your support!”

From Denver H. in Iraq (06.23.07): “I just got a box from Friends of San Carlos Library. I got the last book that I wanted to read from Thomas H. so that one alone was reason to be very happy. I have as many books as I can read till I go home now, so I hope that you can pass this on so other troops can receive this great service as I have. Thank you for what you do and God bless.”

From Denver H. in Iraq (06.23.07): “We have been so lucky to have so many great books sent to us here in Iraq. The days go by so much faster when you are wrapped up in someone else's life within a book. Today I received the fourth package of books. I am happy with how many people picked through them already. If anything comes out of my stay here it is the rediscovery of the joy of reading. I think I will make more time to relax when I do get home for good. So thank you Binnie B., Baltimore, MD and, Lee and David K., Northville, MI for your thoughtful gift.”

From CW3 Michael J. in Iraq (06.17.07): “Just a note to let you know that I received a box of book from Al C. from Glen Allen, VA. Thanks for your support and please Mr. C. that I received his box.”

From 1LT Albert M. (06.17.08): “Operation Paperback: I just wanted to let you know that I received your shipment of books and all the soldiers here are grateful. The books are definitely getting some use from the guys here, and they all can’t wait for the next box. Well, thank you again and Happy Father's Day!”

From MAJ Joseph W. in Afghanistan (06.17.07): “Thank you so much for the books thru Operation Paperback! I have shared with the others from the Surgeon staff and all send their appreciation for the very generous and thoughtful selection.”

From CPT Tavares T. (06.16.07): “Del & Linda J.: First of all, I would like to thank you for the interest and support you have provided for the deployed Soldiers. I received the books and I'm honored you gave of your time and effort. Thank you again. Please continue to pray for our troops and provide support.”

From MAJ Zachary B. in Iraq (06.16.07): “I have received a box of books from Andi in Seattle.”

From Glenn R. (06.15.07): “I just want to say thank you to your organization and your volunteers. Since we have found your site, and requested books, we have received several boxes of books. It is nice how your volunteers take the time to meet our requests and give a good variety at the same time. I requested cookbooks (yes I actually read them, I like to cook and it gives me ideas), and one of my soldiers requested books on home design/repair so he could start getting ready for his new house he wants to buy. He just recently got married before coming over here. Not only all those, but they have sent mysteries, biographies and romances. There is something for everyone. And, the books do not stay out on the front table very long before they are gone. Thanks again for your support.”

From SGT Forrest S. (06.14.07): “Hello: I am SGT. Forrest S. and saw the flyer asking for a reply. Since there are new books here I will assume your shipment made it safely. I think since being here I have read at least 200+ books: western, horror, sci-fi etc. I would like to thank you for your efforts. The books, although not stopping the war, do make it easier. Thank you.”

From SSG Jeffery S. in Korea (06.13.07): “Mrs. Bernhardt's 6th grade class: I would like to take time to thank you for the great selection of books. I will be reading them over the next 6 months until I retire from the military in November. If you have any questions please feel free to send me an email.”

From SFC Santiago O. in Iraq (06.12.07): “To Our Friends of the Lyme Library: Thanks for your support for all of us out here. We greatly appreciate the books. Everyone here has their particular taste in books, but most venture into different areas of interest. Best of all are the book reviews from our soldiers. It's strange discussing book reviews with soldiers in Iraq. At least it's funny to me. Again, thanks for the support. Keep up the hard work.”

From SGT Tammy M. in Iraq (06.12.07): “Just wanted to say thank you for the books. It helps a lot. I have one request, if you could send some western paperback books, that would be great. Once again, thank you!!! Very much appreciated.”

From SPC Candance D. in Iraq (06.10.07): “This is SPC Candance D. here in Iraq. I received some books from you all. I would like to say thank you. I really appreciate it. May God bless you all.”

From SSG Kathleen S. (06.10.07): “Dear Ellen: Thank you for sending me the books. We will all enjoy them. Thank you as well for all the support you give us.”

From 1SG Daniel F. in Iraq (06.08.07): “Sandra Day O'Connor High School Student Council: Thank you so much for your display of support to the soldiers stationed here in Iraq. Your donation reached my company. Our soldiers work very long and hard creating protective structures for outposts. We also repair damage to roads created by roadside bombs. No shortage of work here! It is fantastic what you guys have done for us and the soldiers really do appreciate your donation of books. The reading in between missions allows them to escape. It is a fantastic and well appreciated gift.”

From SSG Tritonya M. (06.08.07): “Thank you so much Operation Paperback. I received my package undamaged and safely. Thanks again.”

From SFC Joseph A. (06.06.07): “Got the books. Will share with others. Thanks.”

From SSG Tyler B. (06.06.07): “Operation Paperback: Thanks you so much for all the great books!! Your packages were a welcome surprise while away. It definitely helped pass the time. I can't express my gratitude enough.”

From CPT Christi H. in Afghanistan (06.04.07): “I received a shipment of books from Marisa R. Thanks you very much! They look like the type of books I'm interested in. Operation Paperback is a great program you’re providing the troops! Thank you from all the troops in Afghanistan!”

From SGT Luke O. (06.04.07): “First, I would like to say thank you. I have received 17 boxes of books since I was signed up for your service. I have really enjoyed and will continue to enjoy reading all of the books. I would like to have my name and mailing address removed. I have more than enough books to share with my buddies. I have passed on your awesome website to others in need of books. Thanks, again for your support.”

From 1SG Sophia S. (06.03.07): “Hello! I wanted to say thank you so much for the books you have sent! So many of these soldiers enjoy reading to pass time. The books are absolutely awesome. I am a big fan of Dean Koontz and Dan Brown. So it is always nice to receive those. We are getting together a nice little library for these soldiers, so thank you for helping us do that. We appreciate all your support and think what you all do is very noble and kind. The picture attached is of some of the soldiers here. God Bless you all!”

From CPT Kristie M. (06.03.07): “My friends, colleagues and I have really enjoyed the books you all sent. They are a GREAT escape from the day to day stress around here. We really appreciate all your support and the work involved in sending things out to us!”

From SPC Karalee N. in Iraq (05.31.07): “I received your shipment of books. You are so generous. I had to split the books amongst my platoon because I didn't have room for all of them! The selection was excellent and we appreciate everything that y’all are doing for us while we are deployed. Thank you for everything that you do.”

From LTC Brian H. in Iraq (05.29.07): “Marilyn: Your support and package were very welcome and immediately pressed into service. The days here for all of us, whether in a HQs or out on the line, all blend into each other. The work is always there, usually 15-18 hours a day and not a lot to do with what spare time you have, but books are always welcome. We all stop and scan the mini-libraries in each other's unit areas, always looking for another good reading opportunity. We cannot tell you how much the simple act of sending used books means to us here. It's not so much the books we receive as much as it is the knowledge that we are in the thoughts of our country back home. Separation from family and friends is a hardship, but I cannot imagine what it would be like if we felt we were forgotten here in the service of our country. But thanks to men and women like you, we do not suffer that fate. We know our country men and women are with us and it makes every soldier stronger. Thank you so much for your service and support.”

From LTC Brian H. in Iraq (05.29.07): “Sir: I received your package. The books were wonderful and we do have some baseball aficionados here that enjoyed the newspaper section. My prayers go with you and your family as they return from duty and go forward to stand on the line. I hope you are proud of them. It takes a special commitment to be a solider. A commitment founded in a higher calling of duty, service, and hope that their service can keep their loved ones at home safe and maybe make the world a better place. It never seems like war is the best way to do that. We all pray for a better way, but it is a testament to the character of our country that we have good and faithful stewards of freedom that are willing to stand on the line. Thank you so much for your thoughts and support. While we may never be able to express them personally, every soldier here carries the knowledge of support from people like you in their memory for life.”

From LTC Brian H. in Iraq (05.29.07): “I want to send my most sincere thanks to Ellen G. and the members of the Knox County Republican Women, Knox County Republican Committee, and the Jackson Memorial Library. Ellen, the books were amazing. I received both packages and apologize for the delay in responding. We stay busy. I cannot thank you and those like you enough for the support we receive here in Iraq. It's such a simple gesture, but such a potent thought that makes all the difference for the soldiers here. Letters, cards, books, just the knowledge that the people back home understand why we do what we do and support us. Soldiers are just soldiers really. Simple creatures called by love of country and a sense of duty to stand on the line in the hopes that it makes the world a better place and keeps our loved ones safe. But we thrive on knowing that you are with us. Thank you so much. I personally latched onto the CS Lewis novels. I enjoy all his works and these are excellent additions to my reading experience. The rest of the books have been placed in two locations. One that services some of the headquarter personnel and another that services a brigade combat team who works outside the wire all day. They were welcome and I know they are being put to good use. Thanks again!”

From SGT Eric W. in the USA (05.29.07): “Hello: I would like to thank you for your thoughts and support. The assortment of paperbacks that your organization has sent to us has been much appreciated. I am happy to say that I am now stateside, and won't need any more paperbacks sent to me. Thanks again for your support.”

From Pedro M. (05.29.07): “Nancy A.: Thanks so much for the paperbacks, specifically the ones referencing business since I am trying to get an MBA. I will be redeploying soon, but I wanted to thank you for the last two boxes. Take care and God Bless.”

From SFC Lamp L. in Iraq (05.28.07): “I want to thank you for the books that arrived here a few days ago. Vietnam Vet Michael S. sent them our way. As a person that is always in the middle of at least two books, getting a fresh variety from which to choose is wonderful. It was tempting to just grab the whole box, but I was able to control myself.”

From SGT Zachary S. (05.26.07): “Operation Paperback and Bertie H.: Thank you so much for the magazines! They are fantastic, and I will enjoy them all. Fantastic choices, I must say. I really do appreciate all of your support. It is very nice to know that you all are taking time out of your busy lives to send out care packages to us soldiers over here. It is so kind, and much appreciated. Thank you again for the outstanding selection of reading materials, I will dive into them the first moment I have to do some browsing!
Take care and God bless.”

From SSG Todd W. (05.22.07): “Dear Donators. I want to say thank you to each and every one of you that made this huge box of books possible. It is such an awesome treat to get new reading material. There is not a lot for us to do here in our free time, so being able to unwind with a good book is truly a blessing. We are building our lending library from the ground up. I know that with over 4,000 of us on this camp these books will get read time and time again.”

From SSG Todd W. (05.22.07): “To Maria R.: Thank you and your children. I know a lot of the kids write letters and never hear back from a soldier, I didn’t want that to be the case. There are many, many people here that are very grateful for the time you took out of your schedules to do this. I hope you are all enjoying your summer vacation. Thank you one and all. Feel free to drop me a line whenever you have a chance.”

From LCDR Keith E. (05.22.07): “Clare: I received my first paperback shipment today and was very happy with the selection."

From CPT Hildehardo V. in Iraq (05.22.07): “To Whom it May Concern: I wanted to write a quick Thank-You for the books that you forwarded to our FOB. It is a Great Morale Booster for the soldiers and the books will be donated to our MWR Library so that all service members deployed to this AO can enjoy your generous gift. Again, thank you for your continued support.”

From LCDR John D. in Iraq (05.21.07): “Thank you so much AGAIN to Operation Paperback. Special Operations in Iraq has received another 2 boxes of books from you all. I think I speak for all here when I say Thank You for remembering all that are over here. The days and nights are long...but everyone seems to carve out a little time to curl up with a good book. Thank you again. And, of course, hello to ‘Little’ Dave in FL!!! ?.

From MSG Ben H. (05.20.07): “Sirs: I wanted to let you know I received the box of paperbacks and am going to put them in the conex so other soldiers can pick some to read. Thanks for all your support. And thanks for the mags on motorcycles.”

From CPL Zachary S. in Iraq (05.19.07): “Mr. and Mrs. K.: Greetings from Iraq! Thank you for the box filled with books and goodies! You must have read my mind, ‘cause I love the granola bars and trail mix! I appreciate your support and all of your hard work to keep our morale elevated over here. It helps us all to receive such nice things in the mail. I look forward to reading and snacking, thanks to your kind gift. Thank you so much, I appreciate everything you do.”

From CPL Zachary S. in Iraq (05.19.07): “Greetings from Iraq! I wish to say a BIG thank you for your support, by sending the box of books! I appreciate your doing that, and I look forward to browsing the titles enclosed in that box. I would like you to know that I appreciate all of your support, as there are many books with your label on them over here in our little libraries. I have a few buddies that I will pass some of these books on to as well, so I say thank you for them as well. Thank you again for your kindness, I appreciate it very much!”

From SGT John M. (05.18.07): “Thank you for the shipment of books. It is greatly appreciated. My apologies for being delinquent on emailing about the last few shipments. All have arrived and I send my thanks.”

From SGT Randolph J. (04.29.07): “I just wanted to drop you a line and say thank you for all of the books that we have received. I have received several shipments over the last couple of months and one of your volunteers even went out of their way to ensure that most of the books were of the genre that I like best, ie sci-fi and fantasy. What books that I don't read are immediately donated to the other troops and then the ones that I like are turned over after I have read them. Again, thank you.”

From SSG Christopher D. (04.22.07): “I have received two shipments of books. There are quite a few readers in my unit and the books where snatched up fairly rapidly. Thank you for the books, they are much appreciated and used.”

From SGT Susan N. in Iraq (04.21.07): “Dear Operation Paperback: I can’t begin to thank you enough for the boxes of books that I have received. I am not a game player or a big movie watcher, but I am an avid reader. So your support in the form of books is very much appreciated. I read about 5 books a week so you can see how many books I go through. I find a lot of joy when I can pass one along, especially to someone who is not a reader. Thank you for allowing the joy of reading to spread through the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Your support is so welcome and thoughtful. Thank you. Thank you.”

From SFC Rob S. (04.21.07): “Dear Tienne M.and all at Operation Paperback: I would like to thank you all for your support. Your organization allows us to relax and take our minds off of the day’s and night’s dangers. In turn, that mental respite allows us to stay sharp for our upcoming missions. From all of us to all of you, thank so very much.”

From Jennifer B. (04.20.07): “Hello! I received a box of books yesterday, put them out for our R&R soldiers, and by this morning all the books have been adopted! On behalf of our servicemen and women, thank you for the many hours of enjoyment you have provided. Your support means so much. Thanks again.”

From SPC Maira M. (04.19.07): “Well, I received my package of books the other day. It probably took longer than expected because I'm located at another place for the time being. But I really appreciate what you do for us and what all those families, especially the Denefrio family, do by sending us books. A book is always good to expand our imagination now that we're here with nowhere to go. Thanks!!!”

LTC Patrick T. (04.19.07): “We received your paperbacks in good order today. We are especially appreciative to our new friends at the Book Cellar Webster Library, a branch of the NY Public Library. There is little entertainment here so your package brought a ray of sunshine to a number of troopers here today. Thanks and God bless.”

From 1LT Chris M. (4.19.07): “To receive the shipment of books that you sent to me! Thank you so much. I was able to make a few troopers happy with what you sent ?. Keep up the good work, and may God bless you and yours!”

From SPC Jodie F. (04.18.07): “Thank you so much for the books I have received. It means the world to me to receive these books from home. It is fantastic to know we are remembered while we are overseas. I have shared the books I have received with other soldiers and they appreciate it too so much. Thanks again.” Stay safe!

From 1LT Jennifer B. in Afghanistan (04.18.07): “Dear Ms. Hill and Mustang Engineering Employees: Thank you so much for responding so quickly in sending out books for me and my platoon. I've got a lot of avid readers, but we are currently at a location that has almost NO books, and will soon be moving to another "new" location to build an all new base from scratch (so we'll be really desperate then). We will share these books amongst ourselves and with our sister platoons. So that you have a better idea about who you support, I am the platoon leader. What that boils down to is that I've got 32 soldiers who are a mix of carpenters, plumbers, and electricians. Part of our mission out here is to build new FOB’s (Forward Operating Bases) in Afghanistan to help American and Coalition Forces expand their reach to help the Afghanistan population. They say "where the road ends, the Taliban begin" and in our case, part of a heavy battalion mission is road construction. When we're not building, we provide jobsite security for our earth-moving platoons. Each company has two vertical platoons (the carpenters, etc.) and one horizontal platoon (the earth-movers). We build up and they build out. Being an engineering corporation, I'm sure you can understand the work that goes into road construction and FOB construction in the sense of the planning and coordination. My guys are damn good at it. The earth-movers will get us there and once there, they'll level the land for us, create sewage lagoons, burn pits and drainage ditches
while helping build up burms to assist in security. My guys will create everything to include living areas, dining facilities, latrines, showers, and TOC offices. Once we finish this new location, we'll move on to the next, and it will continue until we return home next May (thanks to the three month extension!! ? It’s alright though because my guys (and I can say that because I only have one female soldier) love what they do.
